HOOP, THERE IT IS!!!!
The first “hoops” were actually just peach baskets and the first
backboards were made of wire! How far we’ve come! They were used from 1891 - 1906 before being
replaced with metal hoops and backboards. The first backboards were actually
nailed to the Mezzanine Balcony until the crowd started getting in the
way. Queue in the Ref! Interference!
In contrast with modern basketball nets, the peach basket retained
its bottom, and balls had to be retrieved manually after each basket; what a
drag! This proved inefficient, so the bottom of the basket was removed allowing
the balls to be poked out with a long wooden rod each time. Was that the best
they could do??
The first Basketball’s where brown in color and could not stand out
against the basketball hoop. Shortly after that, around the 1950’s, the orange
Basketball was introduced to stand out to the crowd and has stayed the same
till this day!
It’s 2014 and boy have we come a long way! This amazing game remains
the same but the equipment has come up leaps and bounds!
